Terra Tries is a new series here on Love Nothing More. The older I get, the more conservative I get with incorporating trends into my wardrobe. But I love testing out trends! So the challenge gets a little more difficult. So what? That just makes it more fun. :) So here we go... Terra Tries take 1.

Cutouts

Cutouts are a design element that can look so edgy and cool. But they can also go so very wrong. Since we live in the age of showing everyone how little we care, what's the "right way" to incorporate cutouts into our trend pile without looking like we're trying too hard?

It's no secret that I'm in the anti-cold shoulder camp. I rarely see it done in a way that I would feel confident wearing. So those are out. What's left?

If you want my opinion
(which, why are you here if not?)
there are a few things to Consider with Cutouts.

  • Fabric matters. I tend to be more attracted to items that are made with knits or structured fabrics that have a sleek shape. I think it makes the cutout look sharper and more sophisticated.

  • Layer up. Maybe you want to try cutouts but you're a little concerned that you won't be able to wear the piece enough to make it worthwhile. Layering (over AND under) is your best friend. A blazer or vest over the piece can help tone down the exposure. But don't forget that putting a featherweight piece underneath can give you a funky style without all of the flashes of bare skin. I recently picked up this lace turtleneck for layering. It's affordable and awesome.

  • Consider the occasion. So let's be honest, cutouts for a dress you want to wear for a gala versus a night out with the girls versus a baby shower are all going to look different. A wild night out might mean your cutouts are a little larger and sexier. When someone's grandma will be present, maybe you opt for a subtle sliver of skin. Use your best judgement for each occasion.

  • Be comfortable. You know this. If you're tugging at your clothes then you're not comfortable and your confidence plummets. If you try something with cutouts and you're just not feeling it, then move on. There are so many options out there, one will be right for you. Cross my heart.

There are my takeaways. Soooo... what do you think about cutouts? What do you think about Terra Tries? What do you think about LIFE? I'm here for you.

Also, what else do you want me to try? I'm thinking joggers (ugh... this one scares me) could be up next. What other trends are you curious about? Let me know below! xo
