:Jackie v Marilyn:
The Wrap Dress Is a Style Workhorse
There have been several occasions when I’ve been asked what my go-to outfit is in those moments when I need to feel confident. Again and again I go back to the classic wrap dress. I recorded a podcast about Diane von Furstenberg’s storied life and how her design played a role in the women’s liberation movement, but I cannot seem to find it to share. Let’s just say I’m a big fan of DvF and if you know the history, then you may argue quite convincingly that she is as iconic to the women’s lib movement as Gloria Steinem.
I love a good wrap dress because it truly looks fantastic on everyone. It’s comfortable. It can be tightened or loosened depending on meal choices. With the jersey knit, you can literally ball up your dress and throw it in your bag. When it emerges several hours later, it will appear freshly pressed and ready to get down to business. From the design to the fabric, the wrap dress is about ease, efficiency and of course, aesthetic pleasure.
Most importantly, wrap dresses suit the full style spectrum. Jackie or Marilyn? Why choose? Be both! It’s not often just one piece of clothing can look exceptionally professional and exceptionally sexy with just one minor tweak.
Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk about wrap dresses. It feels like maybe we need to have some sort of wrap dress party in the near future! But maybe that’s just the pandemic talking… everything deserves a party these days!
