:Like an Olsen Twin:
The Olsen Fashion aesthetic Is Eternal
Peak Olsen fashion was probably right around 2010. It felt like they dominated the fashion scene in one way or another around that time with an aesthetic that was a little polarizing. See, historically, oversized fashion was reserved for frames that could “carry” the look. You needed to be something like 5’7” or taller to make it work in the eyes and minds of the elitists who called the shots on what was in or out.
Clocking in at just 5’2”, the Olsen twins effectively gave the fashion industry the middle finger by wearing whatever they wanted. I’ve seen their style, but especially Mary-Kate’s, labeled “bag lady chic”. On anyone else, I suppose their looks would have been rejected. But there was always something about their IDGAF attitude that made their style even cooler. They are experts at playing with proportion in a way that elevates every look, rather than distracting from it. As a 5’ tall person myself, I have always admired their style but never thought I could pull it off.
I have seen the error of my ways.
This InStyle article from 2022 declares that the Olsen aesthetic is back in a big way. I have to wonder if it ever really went anywhere. My perspective is if something makes you feel great, then it is always in style.
A couple of notables about this ensemble:
This is a vintage Yves Saint Laurent my friend Christina found for me on Poshmark. It’s a men’s small, which just goes to show that thinking outside of your size/usual shopping category can really pay off.
The earrings were a Christmas gift from my sister-in-law & brother (but really my SIL because I know she’s the one who found them). They were made by a Ukrainian artist and all proceeds go towards supporting Ukraine as they fight for their home.
