Trend: Shopping in the Men’s Department
If you feel like oversized clothing is (still) trending, I’m here to tell you it’s not just a feeling. For every style, there is a season. But the oversized trend feels like it’s been hanging on longer than usual.
Maybe it’s a deep-rooted rebellion against the very low, very cropped aesthetic of women’s fashion in the early aughts. Look no further than recent headlines and documentaries to understand the types of people who were calling the shots about what women should wear back then.
Or perhaps our COVID Comfort Culture had a seismic influence on how everyone dresses, loosening up what’s deemed appropriate to wear in any given circumstance.
Whatever the reason for keeping a little extra room in our clothes, I’m here for it.
I’m a firm believer that if you’re unsure about a trend, don’t spend a ton of money to participate in it. Buy secondhand and consider exploring the men’s department. Not only will it expand your options, it may help you sidestep The Pink Tax. If you aren’t familiar with the concept of The Pink Tax, you should know that from personal care products to clothing and services like haircuts, women often pay more, sometimes 10-15 percent more than men, for similar products merely because those products are for women. Compound this hidden cost with the fact that women are still making less for the same job as their male counterparts, and you’re talking about a major financial disparity.
Ok, once you read up on The Pink Tax, you’ll probably be ready to open yourself up to the Men’s Department. So let’s talk details…
This jacket is Christian Dior, probably from the 80s, and it’s a men’s small. It’s a timeless piece that I picked up from eBay and I always feel like it finishes my outfit perfectly. It reminds me of the overcoats I’m seeing from The Frankie Shop, The Row and elsewhere. Still designer, but for way less.
The denim I picked up at a sale at the old Storehouse Neutral. I specifically went to the shop on a mission to get some oversized jeans. Well, mission accomplished because I got the denim I wanted with a perfect fade and it cost me something like $25. They are Levi’s and they were meant to live forever. I was delighted to give them a new purpose.
