From Winston Churchill’s siren suit to Kate Moss’s LFW look, boilersuits are made for literally everyone. A brief history…

Boilersuits were first worn by men maintaining coal-fired boilers. The sleek one-piece suit allowed for the lucky man who was tasked with cleaning the narrow firebox of a steam locomotive, to shimmy into the shaft without getting his clothing caught. Also known as coveralls, the boilersuit was coopted by other manual workers to wear over and protect their street clothes. And of course, during WWII, our female riveters proved they can get shit done in their boilersuits.

Per usual, fashion adopts functional clothing for its own stylish purposes. The popularity of Ghostbusters in the 80s certainly helped propel the boilersuit into mainstream fashion. Personally, I love when art reflects life. And in this instance, I’m especially enamored with my new boilersuit from the Pittsburgh boutique, Hazel Grey, because of its versatility. It looks good with heels or sneakers. Dressed up or down. It’s fantastic for layering. It cinches at the waist to give me just enough shape. The pockets are deep (hallelujah) and my god, is it comfortable. And I could totally snag some ghosts in it. The only thing I dislike about it is that you have to undress to use the restroom. Noted. I learned a long time ago not to wear rompers to events like concerts or ball games because I’m simply not comfortable putting my entire outfit around my ankles in a porta-potty.

The first week I had this boilersuit, I wore it twice. If you follow my adventures on IG, you know my daughter called me out hardcore on that move. But with a piece this adaptable, I really do not care what anyone thinks about how it looks or how often I wear it. I’ll put it on every single day just to prove I can. I’ve already started poking around for one or two more of these to add to my closet. They will be essential as we transition to spring and continue to work from home. If you’re unsure of what to add to your wardrobe this spring, I highly recommend getting a boilersuit. You will not be disappointed!
