How to pump up a basic outfit

Last Halloween weekend, I had occasion to visit one of my favorite cities - Chicago. My friend Tyler and I traveled there together for a black tie wedding and a few extra days of fun. It was our first friend/non-work trip with each other and we got more than a little excited about our schedule. It was packed, including a visit to Chicago’s famed Kit Kat Lounge for a drag brunch. And to underscore the point, we were indeed there for a black tie wedding. Since I refuse to check a bag, I had to get really creative with my packing. The rest of my wardrobe needed to be simple, coordinated, comfortable for walking and ready for cold weather.

Alas, I had to leave my special drag brunch-worthy items at home. And to complicate matters further, Tyler and I were going to The Art Institute immediately following brunch. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a drag brunch and/or a fine art museum but I’m here to tell you the vibes are quite different.

To get started…

I went super basic. So basic it almost hurts. Cropped jeans, black tank, chevron blazer, boots. I needed SOMETHING to pump things up just a little. I remembered I had packed two sets of gloves for the dress I was wearing to the wedding, unsure of whether I would wear these half gloves or leather opera gloves. On a whim, I decided to see how these little guys would look with all of these basics.

BOOM!

Instantly I felt like I had a little something special that was appropriate for both Kit Kat and The Art Institute. I’m telling you, accessories are a powerful part of your wardrobe. Whether an awesome curb chain necklace, like this one from Sister Epic, or an amazing pair of sunglasses, like this Céline pair, the right accessories are guaranteed to crank up the volume on even the most basic fit. Oh, and half gloves are the accessory you never knew you needed! They’re an easy way to inject a little classy ass kicking into your ensemble. The title of your mood board would be something like Revenge Princess Diana.
