How’s The Progress on Your 2020 Reading List?

Back in December, when the world was something that only lives in our memories now, I put together a list of the 10 books I wanted to read in 2020. Last year I only read eight books so 10 felt like a manageable step up.

I’ll be honest, things weren’t moving along too quickly in the first few months of the year. I started picking up the pace when we traveled to Mexico in late February. (PS: The idea we traveled that close to the shutdown makes me shudder.) Now that we’re at the lake, you’ll find me down by the beach with Stella after work or out on the porch after dinner gobbling up my books. Since we’ve been up here I’ve read “The Hate U Give”, “The Five” and now I’m halfway through “There There”. My vacation read was “Becoming” by Michelle Obama and I legit did not want the book to end. Just hearing her voice so distinctly in the writing made me miss that family so much, particular in this moment.

“Becoming”, was sandwiched by “The Age of Innocence” and “Maid”. The latter was a bit of a slog. Not so much because I had expected more from the book, although I did. But this was March and the shutdown was starting to take hold and my motivation to do anything felt sapped by days working from home and teaching my kid - two efforts where I felt wholly inadequate. That said, I was still reading as much as I could muster and I was able to knock out two of the books on my 2020 list.

While I have my clear favorites (I’ll round those up in a later post), I’ve truly enjoyed each of these books for one reason or another and would recommend them. I’m delighted with my progress and I feel like I could maybe even surpass the 10-book goal I set for myself. But one step at a time. I need to order more books!
